What is the Tassili n'Ajjer, whose main town and oasis is Djanet ?
The Tassili n'Ajjer is an immense plateau in southeastern Algeria, bordering Libya, Niger and Mali, covering an area of 72,000 km². The exceptional density of paintings and engravings, and the existence of numerous prehistoric remains are exceptional testimonies to prehistory. From 10,000 B.C. to the early centuries, successive populations left numerous archaeological traces, including habitats, burial mounds and enclosures, which yielded abundant lithic and ceramic material. However, it is the rock art (engravings and paintings) that has made the Tassili world-famous since its discovery in 1933. Over 15,000 rock engravings and paintings have been recorded to date.
